15.09.2014|Åre, Sweden: Today a four-week seismic survey in and around the deep borehole COSC-1 in Åre, Sweden, conducted by GFZ scientists, is getting off to a start. The aim of the ICDP project COSC (Collisional Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides) within the framework of the Swedish Scientific Drilling Program (SSDP) is the investigation of orogenic processes. For this purpose, a 2.5 km deep borehole was drilled through a well-preserved crustal area of the Caledonian plate collision. Preparatory borehole logging was already carried out in the past week.

In cooperation with colleagues from the Institute of Geophysics and Geoinformatics of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the University of Uppsala, the GFZ Section “Scientific Drilling” is carrying out an extensive seismic survey within the borehole and at the surface utilizing, simultaneously, up to 17 borehole geophones, each containing three component receivers. This transmission and reflection geometry enables a better resolution of the underground and improves the determination of lithological borders. Newly developed modern imaging techniques will be used for the data processing.
