01.09.2014|Istanbul: During the 34th General Assembly of the European Seismological Comission held in Istanbul between 24 and 29 August 2014, GFZ scientist Stefano Parolai has been elected the ESC´s Secretary General. Dr. Parolai is head of GFZ’s Centre for Early Warning Systems EWS.

The European Seismological Comission was created in 1951 by the International Association of Seismology and  Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI) and is nowadays the European/North African regional commission of IASPEI. The  ESC´s mission is to promote the science of seismology within the  scientific community of the European and Mediterranean countries (encompassing the area from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Ural Mountains and from the Arctic Ocean to northern Africa), by promoting research studies, to extend and enhance scientific co-operation and to train young scientists.
