The Helmholtz Open Science Office (os.helmholtz.de) promotes the development of open science in the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. It is a service provider for the Helmholtz Association in shaping the cultural change towards Open Science.

The focus is on the topics of Open Access, Open Research Data, Open Research Software and Open Research Infrastructures, which are worked on in collaboration with committees from the Helmholtz Association as well as with external partners. The office has an important coordination function bringing together various activities within the Helmholtz Association, in collaboration with the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The Helmholtz Open Science Office is a joint activity of the centers of the Helmholtz Association. It is located at the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.

We are looking for a motivated and committed leader with the ability to communicate openly and clearly, as well as to actively shape the process of cultural change towards Open Science in the Helmholtz Association in cooperation with national and international partners.

Your responsibilities:

  • Management, personnel responsibility and associated resource management of the Helmholtz Open Science Office
  • Strategic planning, control and further development of the topic of Open Science in the Helmholtz Association
  • Actively shaping the community's positioning on Open Science in dialogue with relevant committees, in particular, the Open Science Working Group and the Library and Information Management Working Group
  • Active further development of Open Science in cooperation with relevant initiatives and stakeholders in the Helmholtz Association as well as in the national and international environment
  • Representation of the Helmholtz Association in national and international committees on the topic of Open Science
  • Acquisition, coordination and management of third-party funded projects

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed an academic degree (Master's or Dipl. Univ.) in a relevant discipline, preferably with a doctorate
  • proven leadership and leadership experience including motivating leadership
  • Long-term experience in the field of Open Science
  • In-depth knowledge of the university and non-university scientific landscape (national and international) as well as the framework conditions of science administration
  • Deeper understanding of digital infrastructures and digitalization processes in science
  • Proven knowledge of IT in Open Science-relevant infrastructures
  • Familiarity with current developments in scientific methods, digital scientific practice, communication and information infrastructures
  • Knowledge and experience of working practices, structures and management in a scientific organization are an advantage
  • Strong process understanding as well as negotiation skills and willingness to make decisions
  • Appreciative communication skills, both spoken and written
  • German (B2 level) as well as very good knowledge of English

Start date: 1st May 2024
Fixed-term: Until 31st December 2027
Salary: The position is rated at level EG 15 according to TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost). Classification is obtained according to the regulations of the tariff contract in alignement with personal qualification.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week)
Place of work: Potsdam
