EPOS-IP: European Plate Observing System - Implementation Phase

EPOS-IP aims at creating a pan-European infrastructure for solid Earth science to support a safe and sustainable society. EPOS will enable innovative multidisciplinary research for a better understanding of the Earth’s physical and chemical processes that control, for example, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, ground instability and tsunami. The GEOFON team, within the thematic service “Seismology” is in charge of coordinating the EIDA Next Generation services development and involved in the strategic activities and governance as well as in the coordination and interaction with the community. Designing an innovative federated authentication system for EIDA-NG we provide also an important contribution to the task about interoperability with the Integrated core Services (ICS). In the following we briefly outline our actual contribution to the project.

  • EIDA-NG: For the Next Generation European Integrated Data Archive the GEOFON team has developed the Routing Service , the Authorization system and is updating the Web Interface to access data (WebDC3). In addition to the newly developed services GEOFON provides continuous update, improvements and new features in the SeisComP3 software package to facilitate data centre operations. Client side software independent of SeisComP3 has been developed (fdsnws_fetch) and more sophisticated clients are being developed. Coordination of the developments is ensured through the active participation of GEOFON managers and developers in to the Management Board and Technical boards of EIDA.
  • Strategic activities and governance: members of the Seismology section have been strongly engaged in the modernization of the ORFEUS governance to open towards the broader seismological needs (strong motion, computational seismology and beyond in the future). For a period of 2.5 years we have invested substantial resources in the interim ORFEUS secretariat office.
  • Interoperability with Integrated Core Services: the development of EIDA NG services has been coordinated with the Integrated Core Services (ICS). The GEOFON team is supporting the integration participating to regular discussions on metadata integration in a central catalogue by mapping from domain specific metadata to EPOS. The EIDA Authentication Service is being designed in coordination with EPOS ICS and leveraging on the EUDAT-2020 project activities.

Activities at the GFZ within the TCS “Seismology” are carried out in synergy between section 2.4 and 2.6
