The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,500 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

The GFZ Section 4.2 “Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling” in the Department 4 “Geosystems” hosts the Program Office of the International Continental Scientific Program (ICDP), including the ICDP Operational Support Group and the ICDP Executive Directorate. The mandate of ICDP is to provide funding and support to multinational teams of scientists for implementing and realizing scientific drilling projects on land around the globe. Since its foundation in 1996, almost 60 scientific drilling projects on six continents have been executed and completed with ICDP support and co-funding and more than 80 ICDP workshops have been held. ICDP members are 22 countries plus the UNESCO. For GFZ Section 4.2 we invite applications for a 

ICDP Program Officer (f_m_x)

The successful candidate will be contact person for the ICDP panelists (delegates from member countries), their national offices and funding agencies, responsible for the planning, conducting and evaluating of the annual ICDP panel meetings, and support the ICDP Executive Director and help to oversee the ICDP budget.

The successful candidate will work with the ICDP Executive Director and the ICDP Operational Support Group to coordinate ICDP activities in the following fields: 

  • Liaison with ICDP scientists, representatives of funding organizations, delegates from ICDP member countries and partner organizations 
  • Organization, realization and documentation of the annual ICDP panel meetings and workshops
  • Organization of ICDP membership and financial contributions  
  • Administrative handling of ICDPs legal and financial matters in cooperation with the in-house administration
  • Representing ICDP on international conferences and meetings

The position is dynamic and will evolve in line with the requirements of ICDP.

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • BSc or MSc degree or PhD in Earth or Natural Sciences or in Science Management
  • Experience in the assistance and/or coordination of large-scale international Earth science programs, including 
    • Planning and conducting of meetings
    • Knowledge in large-scale program budget control and overview
    • Experience in working with science funding organizations
    • Knowledge in reporting 
  • Ability for and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team and to communicate with international partners
  • Excellent command of spoken and written German and English is required as is the ability to work in a team in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally

Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: Until 31st December 2025 (with option for continuation)
Salary: The salary grouping is determined by the conditions of the Collective Wage Agreement “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)” and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
