08.01.2016: On 1 January the international PhD network “System Risk – A Large-Scale Systems Approach to Flood Risk Assessment and Management” is initiated. It is coordinated at GFZ by Prof. Bruno Merz, section Hydrology, and deals with flood risk.

The EU funded Innovative Training Network ITN with an employment-oriented training of young scientists runs until 2020. 15 PhD students work with ten participating partners, besides the GFZ these are for example the German Federal Environmental Agency, the University of Bristol, the Technical University of Vienna, the University of Bolognaor FutureWater BV, a dutch research and consulting company. In focus of the research network is a novel system approach for flood and water management.

ITNs bring together research and users and are international and interdisciplinary. The aim is to best prepare the participating young scientists for social and professional challenges, with a great emphasis on the non-scientific field.
