I'm a graduate student in Geomorphology and Earth Surface Process Modeling (Sections 5.1 and 5.5) . My supervisors are Niels Hovius and Jean Braun. I'm currently funded through a Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) called SUBITOP: http://www.subitop.eu/home/.
Broadly, the subject of my PhD is the general problem of substrate controls on topography and erosion. I will begin by using signal processing techniques to quantitatively compare topography with spatially variable substrate properties, including tensile strength, fracture density and seismic velocity. Then, armed with a better understanding of the scaling relationships between substrate properties and topography in various real landscapes, I hope to unpack the dependence on substrate properties of one or more geomorphic process laws. My approach to this problem will combine fieldwork with data analysis and modeling.
