Tidal Loading and Asthenospheric Anelasticity

Funding by: The Natural Environment Research Council (NREC), Great Britain

Project Coordinator: Newcastle University, Great Britain

Funding period: 2018-2021

The objective of this project is to estimate harmonic displacements at tidal periods, to test (and potentially improve) models of tidal solid-Earth deformation using dense, globally distributed, continuous GNSS (CGNSS) data. Specifically, we will:

  1. incorporate data from the GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo systems, which will increase the reliability of our measurements especially at the K1 tidal period, and validate these multi-GNSS observations against our existing western European GPS dataset at the M2 period;
  2. develop a new tidal harmonic displacement dataset with global coverage, using multi-GNSS data throughout as much of the data span as possible;
  3. use this new dataset to test models of Earth's anelasticity at tidal periods other than M2, notably S2, N2, O1 and K1; and
  4. use the dataset to test for systematic regional differences in anelasticity at tidal periods, especially between passive margin and subduction zone tectonic settings.
