Scientist in Hydrogravimetry (f/m/x)

The Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1464 "TerraQ - relativistic and quantum-based geodesy", funded by the German Research Foundation is characterised by its unique interdisciplinarity of quantum physics and geodesy. TerraQ aims to advance quantum-based measurement concepts for monitoring mass changes from space and on ground, combined with the corresponding data analysis and modelling, in order to provide sophisticated tools that significantly enhance our knowledge on the involved change processes in the system Earth. The position is part of the TerraQ subproject C05 "Modelling of Mass Variations Down to Small Scales by Quantum Sensor Fusion" which is a collaboration activity of GFZ Potsdam, Leibniz University Hannover and HafenCity University Hamburg. The position will contribute with terrestrial gravimetry and hydrological monitoring and modelling to a combination approach of satellite gravimetry, terrestrial gravimetry and GNSS loading observations that ultimately aims at developing models of regional time-variable gravity and total water storage variations.

Your responsibilities:

  • Design of an innovative regional gravimetric monitoring network with relative and absolute gravimeters
  • Optimization of mobile gravimetric and hydrological field monitoring units
  • Running hydro-gravimetric monitoring sites and measurements campaings
  • Field operation of quantum gravimeters
  • Designing and maintaining adequate data management infrastructures
  • Processing of gravimetric and hydrological observation data including error assessment
  • Evaluation and interpretation of gravity-based water storage variations and different temporal and spatial scales
  • Close collaboration within an interdisciplinary team of technicians, PhD students and scientists at various institutions
  • Presenting results at international conferences and in scientific publications

Your qualifications:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in geodesy, hydrology, geophysics, geotechnology, or related sciences
  • Proven experience with running terrestrial gravimetric surveys
  • Proven experience with operating Muquans quantum gravimeters
  • In-depth understanding of hydrological processes
  • Technical and scientific expertise in designing and operating hydro-gravimetric field monitoring stations, including power supply management for self-sufficient remote operations
  • Expertise in applying and analyzing hydro-geophysical field methods (Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensing, ERT and others)
  • Experience in organizing field campaigns with multiple partners incl. federal agencies
  • Very good programming skills in Python and R with version control
  • Skills in GIS, database programming and near-real-time automatized data transfer routines for field data
  • Proficient in spoken and written English
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently, as well as within a multidisciplinary team


Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: 3.5 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
Place of work: Telegrafenberg Potsdam
The position offers the possibility of graduating as Dr. rer. nat. (PhD).
