International Centre for Global Earth Models (ICGEM)

International Centre for Global Earth Models (ICGEM, URL: icgem.gfz-potsdam.de) is one of the five services coordinated by the International Gravity Field Service (IGFS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and is a part of Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). The primary objective of the ICGEM service is to collect and archive all existing static and temporal global gravity field models and provide an online interactive calculation service for the computation of gravity field functionals freely available to the general public. The ICGEM Service has been hosted and funded by the GFZ-Potsdam German Research Centre for Geosciences and is supported by model developers and service users at an international level.

The task of this job is further development resp. enhancement of particular web-based ICGEM service components with dedicated focus on the visualization tools.

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop a workflow that links the ICGEM Calculation Service with a Visualization Interface to display temporal model series
  • Develop a workflow that optimises the existing 3D Visualisation tools
  • Data and metadata compilation for global gravity field modelling
  • Close collaboration within an interdisciplinary network of scientists

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Geosciences, Physics, Mathematics or other related sciences
  • Proven experience with web-development (Front and Backend)
  • Proficiency in python3
  • Programming skills in JavaScript
  • Experience with MongoDB
  • Knowledge of OpenLayers, CherryPy, Jinja2 is beneficial
  • Good knowledge of the English and German languages
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with supervision in a multidisciplinary team


Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term:  Maximum 6 months
Salary: Remuneration is according to the rules of the TdL (tariff area East) for student assistants with a Bachelor’s degree: currently € 12.21/h
Working hours: Maximum 19,25 hours per week
Place of work: Potsdam
