The Executive Board is the governing body of the GFZ. In carrying out its assignments it is responsible for all business and decision-making as far as no further authority has been defined in the GFZ Foundation Statutes.

The GFZ is jointly represented by the two members of the Executive Board, in particular, in judicial and extrajudicial matters. The Scientific Executive Director is also Chairman of the Board. He steers the Board and represents the Foundation externally. The Executive Board member for the administrative field is also in charge of the budget.
