Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Konstantinos Megalooikonomou

Function and Responsibilities:

Seismic Risk Assessment for the EU funded project DESTRESS (Demonstration of soft stimulation treatments of geothermal reservoirs).

Research Interests:

My research interests include Seismic Strengthening of RC Structures using FRP Composites, Finite Element Modeling of RC Structures and Earthquake Engineering.

I am a civil engineer (structural option) of Democritus University of Thrace of Greece.

After obtaining my degree (4th November 2005) I applied for the Master degree in Earthquake Engineering at ROSE School of the University of Pavia of Italy. I was admitted at ROSE School with an accommodation scholarship and I obtained my Master title in May 25th 2007 at the 7th International ROSE School Conference where I presented my Master Thesis. For my Master Thesis I moved to Rome to work under the supervision of Professor G.Monti at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and my research was funded by the Marie-Curie program EN-CORE (European Network for Composite Reinforcement). Reviewer of the thesis was also Professor T.Triantafillou of the University of Patras in Greece.

After one year break for my military service, I signed a contract for research with the University of Rome “Roma Tre” in the area of seismic retrofit with FRP’s. In the second year of this contract I had the opportunity to be a Visiting Student Researcher at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Structural Engineering Mechanics and Materials) of the University of California Berkeley,USA under the faculty sponsorship of Prof. F.C.Filippou on Nonlinear Structural Analysis for six months.

Afterwards, I started my PhD studies at the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Professor S. J. Pantazopoulou. My PhD studies at the University of Cyprus were funded by the Onassis Foundation with a triennial scholarship.

  • The Laboratories University Network of seismic engineering in Italy (ReLUIS), founded with conventional act signed on 17th of April of 2003, is a inter-university consortium with the purpose to coordinate the University Laboratories activity of seismic engineering, giving scientific, organizational, technical and financial supports to associated University and promoting their participation to scientific and technological orientated activities in seismic engineering area, accordant with national and international research plans in this area.
  • The ENCORE Marie Curie Initial Training network comprises a cohesive and complementary team of top experts in the field from 9 different countries, having the majority of participants from Industry, EU less favoured regions and Associated states. The network aims to create the ideal environment for delivering the best training for young researchers in the field of FRP reinforcement using a variety of delivery modalities, including an intensive research training course, Young Researchers Conferences and industry mentoring.
