EnPT - EnMAP Processing Tool

The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a German hyperspectral satellite mission that aims at monitoring and characterising the Earth’s environment on a global scale. The EnPT Python package is an automated pre-processing pipeline for the new EnMAP hyperspectral satellite data. It provides free and open-source features to transform EnMAP Level-1B data to Level-2A. The package has been developed at the German Research Centre for Geosciences Potsdam (GFZ) as an alternative to the processing chain of the EnMAP Ground Segment.

This software was developed within the context of the EnMAP project supported by the DLR Space Administration with funds of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy and contributions from DLR, GFZ and OHB System AG.

User group

EnPT is especially designed for the needs of the hyperspectral data community who want to have extensive control about the processes and algorithms included in the EnMAP level 2 processing chain. The package is freely available from the Python package index or conda-forge.


The EnPT processing chain includes algorithms and routines for the following processing steps:

  • read EnMAP Level-1B input data
  • radiometric conversion to top-of-atmosphere radiance
  • dead pixel correction
  • atmospheric correction (based on SICOR for land and ACwater/Polymer via Polymer for water surfaces)
  • conversion of top-of-atmosphere-radiance to top-of-atmosphere-reflectance
  • detection and correction of geometric misregistrations compared to user provided spatial reference (based on AROSICS)
  • orthorectification based on sensormapgeo and geolocation arrays generated at runtime
  • write EnMAP Level-2 output data

Each processing step offers several configuration parameters and is therefore highly customizable according to the users needs. As a result, EnPT produces a single hyperspectral surface reflectance data cube which is orthorectified and may also be co-registered to a user-provided reference image. The output format is very similar to the official EnMAP level 2 data format of the ground segment but also includes some additional data and useful by-products generated at runtime.

EnPT can be used as a command line tool but also offers a Python API. Additionally, the software comes along with a graphical user interface that can be installed within QGIS as plugin of the EnMAP-Box. This GUI helps to quickly parameterize a rather complex processing chain, start the processing with one click and to keep track of the of the current processing status, log messages and the overall progress.
