Geoarchives

Funding: BMBF - Federal Ministry of Education and Research
Status: current

The BMBF co-operative project GeoArchives is part of the FONA - "Forschung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung" program and within the international research program SPACES - "Science Partnerships for the Assessment of Complex Earth System Processes". In this study we intend to examine the connections between earth-surface processes on slopes such as sheet wash, colluvial sediment transport, and eolian movements and their links to the fluvial system via three major geomorphic forms as terrestrial geoarchives: slopes, fans, and terraces.
The GeoArchives project is lead by Technical University Muenchen, Muenchen, Germany, with partners from GFZ sections 1.4, 4.3, 4.5, and from Research institute Senckenberg am Meer Wilhelmshaven, and working with many collaboration partners in South Africa and Namibia (e.g. University of Cape Town UCT/South Afrika; University of the Free State UFS Bloemfontein/South Afrika; University of Namibia UNAM; Geological Survey Namibia) .

The Remote Sensing section of GFZ is leading SP1: "Identification and mapping of palaeoenvironmental archives and process analysis in Southern Africa based on hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing technology" , whose goals are to examine the potential of current and future (EnMAP) advanced optical sensors for the identification and mapping of the exposed geomorphic forms and process analysis.
