GFZ German research centre for geo sciences

Digital Earth

Objective:  Significant advances in Earth system understanding will only be achieved through better integration of data and knowledge from the different Earth science disciplines and Earth compartments. Improvement in this field strongly depends on our capabilities of dealing with fast growing multi-parameter data and on our effort employing novel Data and Computer Science methods and technologies.

Digital Earth proofs and develops approaches and tools for scientific needs regarding digital workflows, visual data exploration, machine learning, and component-based software frameworks. The main focus of Digital Earth is on Integrated Data Exploration and Smart Monitoring.

Digital Earth has been initiated by eight centres of the Helmholtz research field Earth and Environment:

  • Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung
  • Forschungszentrum Jülich
  • GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel
  • Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam, Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ
  • Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon
  • Helmholtz Zentrum München
  • Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung - UFZ
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie

Funding period: 01.06.2018 - 31.12.2021
