Priv. Doz. Dr. Thomas Walter

Function and Responsibilities:

ERC Consolidator Group Leader
Head of the volcano hazards workgroup, Section 2.1 at GFZ Potsdam
Principal investigator of national and international projects
Staff scientist at GFZ Potsdam
Lecturer (Priv.-Doz.) at University Potsdam

Research Interests:

My main interest is related to the observation and modelling of volcano and earthquake deformation processes and source characterization. Further interests include the activity of geysers and hydrothermalism, as well as the mechanics and propagation of ruptures. I focus my studies on interacting processes, such as volcano-earthquake interactions, or the relationship between flank motion and magmatism or fluid ascent.

Methods include
Geodesy: analysis of deformation processes by means of modern and innovative geodetic techniques
Computer vision: time lapse and high speed imaging, image cross correlation and particle image velocimetry with application to determine eruption dynamics, flank instability and flow processes
Geophysical remote sensing: Optical and radar satellite data analysis, InSAR, pixel tracking and interpretation
Numerical and lab modelling: Source modelling, boundary element modelling, stress transfer modelling, and analog experimentation
