The ELEMENT 2XR... a high-resolution sector field mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS) with inductively coupled plasma as an ion source. The multiple detector system allows analysis of trace elements simultaneously with major elements.

The ion optics give the instrument the following characteristics:

1. Excellent detection limits below 1ng/l

2. The typical mass-independent sensitivity for a HR-ICP-MS an improvement in the stability and reduction of the detection limit over the whole mass range from Li to U

3. Extension of the analysis possibility by application of the high resolution

The following is routinely measured after acid dissolution of rocks:

  • Trace elements: Li, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Rb, Sr, Nb, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ta, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th, U
  • REE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu

The elements of the platinum group can be determined following an elaborate preconcentration technique (Nickel Sulfide Fire Assay): Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt, Au, Ag

In aqueous solutions it is possible to determine: Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Fe and the trace elements above
