(Since 2008) Development of a measuring device for prediction while drilling

Geothermal heat is of particular importance to ensure a sustainable power supply in germany . To increase the potential of geothermal energy the development of deep geothermal reservoirs requires cost-effective and successful drilling of boreholes into the reservoir. The main focus is put on the methods of exploration to reliably detect the geothermal reservoirs.

In this project, a new borehole tool adapted to the conventional state of the technology will be developed. The borehole tool will include a seismic source and receivers for a high-resolution seismic prediction ahead of the drillhead. Images of geological structures ahead of the drillhead will be used to improve the efficiency of the reservoir development.

For the application in boreholes down to 5 km depth, special standards are needed to resist high temperature and pressure in the depth. The seismic source and the geophones must be integrated in a drillhead with a small diameter less than 8 ½”. Additionaly, an autarkic power supply of the borehole tool is needed.
