In this project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), it is planned to develop, to construct and to install a geothermal demonstration power plant together with Indonesian partner organizations and to operate, test and optimize it at an existing geothermal site (Lahendong, North-Sulawesi).
Indonesia has about 40 percent of the world's proven geothermal resources, but until now only high-enthalpy geothermal resources are used. An efficient exploitation of a lower temperature range can significantly extend the exploitable geothermal potential.
The main project goal is to demonstrate a reliable and efficient power production from low-enthalpy geothermal resources in Indonesia. The experiences from planning, operating, and optimizing this demonstration power plant could be the basis for an extended utilization of high-enthalpy geothermal sites, also for decentralized energy supply in Indonesia.
The German-Indonesian collaboration started in 2010 within the project "Sustainability concepts for exploitation of geothermal reservoirs in Indonesia". Since then, German and Indonesian project partners worked together in the fields of reservoir exploration and reservoir engineering. Furthermore, interdisciplinary training courses have been and are currently being carried out.
