Seismic 3D repeat measurements on a focused area close to the CO2 injection at Ketzin

The CO2 storage operations at Ketzin are monitored by a broad range of different seismic surveys. Repeated 3D seismic surface measurements are an important constituent of these surveys. In the year 2005, a 3D baseline survey was acquired on a large area (14 sqkm) around the planned injection site. This survey delivered a high resolution image of the storage formation's geological architecture and of its overburden. The first repeat survey was acquired in 2009 and the processing and interpretation of the time-lapse results were done in the framework of this project. The field acquisition was performed by the GFZ, Uppsala University and GGD Leipzig GmbH. The acquisition area covered approximately 50% of the original baseline survey area. Data processing and interpretation are done, among other, in the framework of a collaborative PhD thesis by GFZ and Uppsala University. The time-lapse amplitudes in the depth range of the Stuttgart Formation (the storage formation) provided a detailed image of the lateral extension of the CO2 stored in the formation in Autumn 2009. Current research within this project is concentrating on a refined qauntitative description of the results.
