Global Observatories

Our observatories are a key instrument for a comprehensive understanding of the system Earth. The combination of monitoring programmes and observatories allows for an observation of the processes shaping the Earth system from a local to a global scale. Our main focus is on identifying and analysing natural hazards and observing the impacts of global climate change. We are running two types of observatories. On the one hand the Global Observatories with an instrumental focus on only one type of signal but with a global coverage, and on the other hand the regional Earth System Observatories.

Geomagnetiv Observatories

Aglobal network of geomagnetic observatoriesmonitors the Earth's magnetic field and provides important contributions to studying Earth's interior (core and mantle) as well as near Earth space. It supports navigation, exploration of natural resources, and space weather monitoring.

Geodynamic Observatory

The South African Geodynamic Observatory Sutherland (SAGOS) of GFZ is a high precision geodynamic observatory comprising space techniques and ground instruments. SAGOS is located at the site of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). The operation and maintenance of the SAGOS instrumentation is jointly done by staff of SAAO and GFZ.

GEOFON - Global Seismic Network

The global seismic network GEOFONoffers several services in the field of global networks, data storage and distribution as well as data communication. With this network a seismic infrastructure for the research on and therewith risk reduction of earthquakes and tsunami is provided.

GNSS Station Network

The International GNSS Service (IGS) as a service of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) provides GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data and products of highest quality. GFZ contributes to this service by operating about 30 globally distributed Multi-GNSS reference stations and hosting one Analysis Centre (AC).
