Data Systems

Highly precise measurements of the most important geoscientific indicators and properties on all scales of space and time as well as continous monitoring of changes in the Earth's system are essential for an understanding of the Earth's dynamic, its potential fields, and processes of the Earth's surface.

These measurements are crusial input parameter for an investigation of natural hazards and global change and for providing scientific fundamentals for purposive adaption measures. The Modular Earth Science Infrastructure MESI  integrates a major part of the data systems that are provided by GFZ or that GFZ is participating in.

GEOFON Data archive

The webdc3 interface gives access to seismic data of the GEOFON programme.

GNSS data

GFZ is operating an analysis center of the International GNSS Service (IGS). Data from a globally distributed network of more than 200 stations serve as a basis for all geo-references and monitoring of tectonic movements including see level changes, monitoring of Earth rotation parameters (ERPs), atmospheric monitoring, transition of precise time and frequencies, precise satellite orbits, and clocks for broad applications in research and surveying. Presently the navigation systems GPS, GLONASS and Galileo are included in the analyses.

Earth's gravity field data

The International Centre for Global Earth Models (ICGEM) makes all global gravity field models of the Earth, which are provided as sets of spherical harmonic coefficients, available to the public. This covers the most recent models back to historical data. The spherical harmonic coefficients are available in a standardised self-explanatory format. The models can be downloaded from the ICGEM website and can be used within an interactive visualisation tool and in a dedicated gravity function calculation service.

Geomagnetic observatory data

The GFZ operates and supports geomagnetic observatories worldwide. We provide unique and important scientific data for the investigation of Earth's interior and near-Earth space, as well as for navigation, exploration, and the monitoring of space weather.

Magnetotelluric data

The GFZ operates a magnetotelluric reference station. Magnetotelluric data [telluric: 'concerning the Earth'] are used for geophysical deep sounding: Time varying magnetic fields induce electric currents in conductive structures of the Earth’s interior, which can be measured at surface to infer the structure of the Earth’s crust. The reference station is located in an area that is only little disturbed by artificially generated electromagnetic signals. The data of the reference station can therefore be used to improve locally acquired magnetotelluric data in areas with higher electromagnetic noise levels. The time-series data are available since the year 2011.

Earth system parameter and orbital dynamics

GFZ is operating a qualified Analysis Center of the international Laser Ranging Service (ILRS). The daily combinations e.g. serve EOP prediction needs of the International Earth Rotation and reference systems Service (IERS).

Satellite data

GFZ analyses data of various satellite missions, which describe the geometric or physical shape of the Earth or its magnetic field. Data from the CHAMP and GRACE missions are long-term archived at GFZ’s Information System and Data Center (ISDC).

Seismological data

The global seismic network GEOFON offers seismic data and earthquake data. It runs a data center and a data archiv. The center records and distributres real time data streams of all GEOFON stations as well as of several partner networks and plate boundary observatories. It also archives and distributes data of temporaey experiments and serves as a permanet archive for the Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP).

Geophysical experiment data

The GIPP Experiment and Data Archive is the platform for long-term archiving of geophysical experiment data and its dissemination. The archive contains metadata of all field experiments supported by the "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam" (GIPP), and contains data of controlled-source seismic and magnetotelluric field measurements.

KP-Index: Indices of global geomagnetic activity

The planetary three-hour-range Kp index was introduced by J. Bartels in 1949 and is derived from the standardized K index (Ks) of 13 magnetic observatories. It is designed to measure solar particle radiation by its magnetic effects. The geomagnetic ap, Ap, Cp and C9 and the classification of international Q-days and D-days are derived from the Kp index.

Declination data

The IGRF declination calculator provides declination data for any location on Earth and any time between the years 1900 to 2020. The calculation for a year in general gives values of sufficient accuracy for the orientation by magnetic compass. Apart from the declination angle in degrees (°) and minutes (') the declination calculator also provides field intensity, inclination and other commonly used geomagnetic field components.

Archeomagnetic and paleomagnetic lava and sediment data

The database GEOMAGIA50 provides archeomagnetic/volcanic, and paleomagnetic lava- and sediment data. The database is an international project for an easy access to respective published data and age information data for the last 50,000 years.

Maps and map data

The World Stress Map (WSM) is the global compilation of information on the present-day stress field of the Earth's crust with 21,750 stress data records in its current WSM database release 2008. The database is open access via the WSM-Website.

Earthquake catalogue for Europe and the Mediterranean

The European-Mediterranean earthquake catalogue (EMEC) consists of some 45,000 entries of earthquakes of the last millenium (1000 to 2006). Data within the catalogue area can be obtained as ASCII-file through the EMEC Earthquake Catalogue Web Service. This webservice also enables the creation of seismicity maps according to user's specifications.
