IAG Young Authors Award for Susanne Glaser

Susanne Glaser has been awarded the 2019 IAG Young Authors Award by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG).

At the Scientific General Assembly of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), Susanne Glaser was awarded the 2019 IAG Young Author's Award. It is considered one of the most prestigious international awards for young researchers in geodesy.

The award was given for her contribution

"On the impact of local ties on the datum realization of global terrestrial reference frames",

which she wrote together with Rolf König, Karl Hans Neumayer, Tobias Nilsson, Robert Heinkelmann, Frank Flechtner & Harald Schuh. It has been published in 2019 in the Journal of Geodesy, 93: 655-667.

The scientific paper deals with the impact of random and systematic uncertainties and the selection of local ties used when combining different geodetic space methods to determine global terrestrial reference frames.

Global terrestrial reference frames can be understood as coordinate systems of the Earth and represent the metrological basis of Earth system research. Changes on Earth, such as global sea level rise, can only be observed if an accurate and reliable reference frame is available.

The award-winning work is based on a comprehensive simulation study combining seven years of GPS (Global Positioning System), SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) and VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) data. This research has far-reaching implications for our understanding of uncertainties in today's reference frames.

Susanne Glaser received her PhD in geodesy from the Technische Universität Dresden in 2014 and has been a research associate at the GFZ since 2017. Here she researches the combination of geodetic space methods for the creation of global reference frames.
