New trainees start their careers at the GFZ

The new training year has begun at the GFZ. We welcome seven young people who are laying the foundations for their professional future here.

On September 01, the new training year has begun at the German Research Centre for Geosciences Potsdam (GFZ). We welcome seven young people who are training here as physics laboratory assistants, industrial mechanics, IT specialists and office management assistants. During an introductory event and a tour of the historic Telegrafenberg, they gained a first insight into their future working environment.

Awarded as a top training company

The GFZ has been awarded the title of "Top Training Company": The trainees are supported by qualified instructors. With our special scientific and international working environment, we offer a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment and excellent working conditions. This also includes the possibility of an internship abroad worldwide.

A total of 29 young women and men are currently laying the foundations for their professional future at the GFZ within the framework of vocational training. In addition to the specialist areas already mentioned, they are learning to be chemical laboratory assistants, electronics technicians and library assistants.

Further options for young people

In cooperation with the TH Brandenburg, the GFZ also offers a dual study programme in information technology. The first graduate successfully completed her examination a few days ago and will now continue to work in the IT department of the GFZ for an initial period of one year.

In addition, as of today, four school leavers are again completing a Voluntary Natural Science Year (FJN) at the GFZ: they will be joining the "Climate Dynamics and Landscape Development" section (two) as well as the public relations office and the school laboratory, learning new things and experiencing and supporting everyday professional life.

Employees in apprentice professions are an important basis for a successful research centre

In addition to the scientists, employees from very different fields - in laboratories, IT, administration, workshops - contribute significantly to the success of our research and the international reputation of our centre. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) is the national centre for research into the solid Earth. We explore the structure and change of planet Earth. And we develop solutions for major challenges facing our society, such as climate change, natural hazards and a sustainable supply of energy and raw materials. (ud)
