Three new PhD student networks granted

13.05.2015: No less than three new PhD networks with GFZ participation, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action fellowships: Innotivative Training Networks (ITN), are approved by EU Commission, while the approval rate is only 6,8%. Two of these networks will be coordinated at GFZ, in section Hydrology, Geomorphology, and Lithosphere Dynamics, one at University of Bristol, with participation of GFZ sections Geomicrobiology and Interface Geochemistry. Now the contract preparation phase begins.

The approved projects are: „SYSTEM-RISK - A Large-Scale Systems Approach to Flood Risk Assessment and Management“ (Prof. Bruno Merz, Dr. Heidi Kreibich, Dr. Sergiy Vorogushyn, section 5.4; GFZ coordinated), „SUBITOP - Understanding subduction zone topography through modelling of coupled shallow and deep processes“ (Prof. Nils Hovius, section 5.1, and Prof. Onno Oncken, section 3.1; GFZ coordinated), „MicroArctic - Microorganisms in warming Arctic environments“ (Prof. Dirk Wagner, section 4.5, and Prof. Liane Benning, section 3.5; coordination by University of Bristol). Another ITN project with GFZ participation is still on the list of substitutes of the EU Commission.

ITNs are European networks for the structured, interdisciplinary doctoral training of young scientists under the goal of supporting their scientific and general competences within international research and training programmes. Experienced scientists can initiate these ITNs on a high scientific level. Within the frame of these schools interdisciplinary trainigs are offered. The Marie Curie programmes consist of financially very well equipped grants, the three new programmes at GFZ are therefore a great contribution to the young scientist training at GFZ. The funding period is from three up to 36 months.
