Three new European geothermal projects at GFZ

On 7 and 8 March, kick-off meetings for the geothermal projects DESTRESS "Demonstration of Stimulation Treatments of Geothermal Reservoirs" and SURE "Novel Productivity Enhancement Concept for a Sustainable Utilization of a Geothermal Resource" take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The projects are coordinated by Ernst Huenges (DESTRESS), and Thomas Reinsch (SURE), GFZ section Geothermal Energy Systems.

07.03.2016: On 7 and 8 March, kick-off meetings for the geothermal projects DESTRESS "Demonstration of Stimulation Treatments of Geothermal Reservoirs", and SURE "Novel Productivity Enhancement Concept for a Sustainable Utilization of a Geothermal Resource" take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The projects are coordinated by Ernst Huenges (DESTRESS), and Thomas Reinsch (SURE), GFZ section Geothermal Energy Systems.

In focus of the projects is the reliable and efficient supply of deep geothermal energy, with emphasis on soft stimulation technologies to increase productivity of geothermal reservoires. Both projects are funded by the EU programme HORIZON 2020. Furthermore, GFZ is involved in the project GeoWell „Innovative materials and designs for long-life high-temperature geothermal wells“, launched in February 2016, that is coordinated by the Iceland GeoSurvey ÍSOR. Its focus is on the development of safe completion components for geothermal wells.

The kickoff meetings will be followed by a Joint Geothermal Project Meeting of eight European geothermal projects that deal with questions related to drilling and stimulation technologies as well as with the completion and monitoring of geothermal wells. The aim of this meeting is to identify synergy options to jointly optimize the use of geothermal resources.
