At 9 am this Monday, 1 July 2013, the Geosciences Summer School on GNSS was opened at the GFZ. Part of a research project of the European Union, it will continue until 3 July.

The aim of the EU research project GfG2 (Global Navigation Satellite Systems for Global Earth Observation) is the use of satellite navigation signals (such as GPS) for applications beyond positioning and navigation as exemplified by vehicle navigation. At present, GPS data is continuously used to improve weather forecasts and to analyse earthquakes, for example.

40 students or young postdocs from more than 15 European countries take part in the summer school. They were selected from a much larger number of applicants. The lecture program is designed by ten of the world's leading experts in Earth Observation with GNSS methods.

Dr. Jens Wickert from section 1.1 GPS / Galileo Earth Observation is the GFZ scientists responsible for the GfG2 project and also for the summer school. In addition to the technical part, he and his team have prepared a rich framework program to offer the participants a unique experience in Potsdam.
