Sonja Martens will be president of the EGU ERE-Division

Sonja Martens, Manager of the GFZ Department Geochemistry, has been elected President of the Division “Energy, Resources and the Environment (ERE)” of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). She will take the office at the EGU General Assembly in April 2017 by Chris Juhlin from Uppsala University, who has been running the division since 2013.

13.12.2016: Sonja Martens, Manager of the GFZ Department Geochemistry, has been elected President of the Division “Energy, Resources and the Environment (ERE)” of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). She will take the office at the EGU General Assembly in April 2017 by Chris Juhlin from Uppsala University, who has been running the division since 2013.

This is the beginning of a two-year term as ERE President for Sonja Martens. To date, she has already been involved as convener in the session "Field methods and analysis of field data for CO2 geological storage". From 2009 to 2014 Martens was principal research scientist at the GFZ Centre for Geological Storage and project manager for the Ketzin pilot site, before she became manager of the Department of Geochemistry in 2015. She is a degreed engineer and holds a PhD of the Hamburg University of Technology, Institute for Water Resources and Water Supply.

The EGU was formed in 2002 by merging the European Geophysical Society and the European Union of Geosciences and is Europe's largest geoscientific union. It has more than 12,500 members from all over the world and is organized in 22 divisions covering all disciplines of geosciences. The annual General Assembly of the EGU is the largest geoscientific conference in Europe. (ak)
