28.10.2014: Dr. Susanne Liebner, GFZ Section „Geomicrobiology“, today received her official nomination as Assistant Professor for Molecular Environmental Microbiology. She will take up this joint appointment between the GFZ and Potsdam University on 1 November.

Susanne Liebner will lecture MSc students in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation as well as in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Institute for Biochemistry and Biology. Given her background both in Earth sciences and biology the scientific focus of her work concentrates on the link between microbial structure, function, and abundance with environmental parameters with key emphasis on the microbial carbon cycle in terrestrial hot spots of climate-relevant ecosystems such as peat and permafrost environments. Since 2013 Dr. Liebner has been leading the Helmholtz Young Investigators Research Group MicroCene which targets microbial distribution patterns and functions in the subsurface biosphere.

Also on October 28, 2014 the certificate of a full professorship (W3) for Remote sensing in the field of geosciences at the University of Potsdam was handed over to Dr. Luis Guanter. After taking up the new duties as head of section “Remote Sensing” in the beginning of October now the issues of student education in this scientific field transferred into his hands too. Since 1999 Prof. Hermann Kaufmann successfully gave the students of geosciences an understanding of remote sensing. With a hand shake he delivered the official functions without lack of continuity to his successor. See also here.
