24.03.2017: Observation of planet Earth is a collaborative thing. This is why the GFZ engages in several international partnerships, for example in the field of natural hazard research. To strengthen future collaboration within Southeast Asia, representatives of the Earth Observatory Singapore EOS and the GFZ held a workshop meeting in Potsdam on March 22 and 23.

Already on August 1 in 2015, GFZ Scientific Executive Director Reinhard Hüttl and Ludwig Stroink, Head of the GFZ International Office, visited the Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore. The workshop was a follow-up on this meeting. The Earth Observatory Singapore is part of the Nanyang Technological University. Its research focus is on natural hazards in and around Southeast Asia. It further aims at imparting knowledge towards society.

Future collaboration between EOS and the GFZ is based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Topics in focus are the investigation of natural hazards like volcanic eruptions or earthquakes as well as climate research. Furthermore, the exchange of young talents and the shared use of research infrastructure is to be promoted in future collaborative projects of EOS and the GFZ. (ak)
