15.09.2017: The German-French research co-operation is an important driver for European science. On September 11 and 12, the joint symposium “Earth System Dynamics - New Prospects for bilateral French-German Cooperation in Climate Protection and Energy Transition“ took place at GFZ and the French Embassy in Berlin.

50 researchers from 20 institutions discussed how France and Germany can exchange know-how in the fields of Earth system analysis, climate change, and energy research. Observatories, especially satellites, played an important role. The closing session at the French Embassy saw the presentation of a position paper drafted in the two days and a panel debate focussing more on the political dimension of climate change research and the energy transition in Germany and France. Keynote speakers were Michael Rast from ESA and Ottmar Edenhofer from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC). There was mutual agreement on strengthening the ties between France and Germany in Earth observation and remote sensing, usage of the underground for storage of nuclear waste or carbon dioxide, and Earth system research. The symposium was organised by the International Office of the GFZ together with the French Embassy. (jz)
