Report | 10th European Geothermal PhD Day

From the 25 to 27 February international PhD students doing their PhD in the field of geothermal energy meet on Telegrafenberg.

From the 25 to 27 February GFZ hosts the European Geothermal PhD Day EGPD. The symposium of European PhD students doing their PhD in the field of geothermal energy, organized by GFZ section Geoenergie, will be the tenth anniversary of this event. The initial meeting, ten years ago, took place at GFZ on Telegrafenberg, as well.

Since the first meeting, the event has become more and more international: participants come from all over Europe but also from far away, like the Iran, Mexico or Kenya. They conduct research in various areas on the topic of geothermal energy production, from geology over geochemistry and geophysics to mechanical engineering. Over the past few years, the meeting has taken place in numerous countries, such as Iceland, the Netherlands, Italy or Hungary.

The conference program includes lectures by national and international scientific experts on the latest developments in the field of geothermal energy production, but also on accompanying socio-economic aspects. The focus is on the exchange among the doctoral students. On the third day of the event, an excursion to Groß Schönebeck is on the program, to GFZ’s geothermal research platform.

Sponsors of the EGPD 2019 include GFZ, the International Geothermal Association, GPC New Zealand, the EU research project DESTRESS, and the Berlin-Brandenburg research network GeoX. (ak)
