Prof. Dr. Stephan Sobolev elected to the prestigious Academia Europaea

Prof. Dr. Stephan Sobolev has been elected to the prestigious Academia Europaea.

The Academia Europaea promotes outstanding scientific achievements worldwide in the humanities, law, economics, social and political sciences, as well as in the natural and technical sciences. Great importance is attached to promoting the highest possible standards in science, research and education. Admission to the Academia Europaea is by invitation only and is subject to a rigorous selection process by the respective section. The main criterion for membership is the candidate's sustained academic excellence in his or her field.

The aim of the Academia Europaea is to promote interdisciplinary research in particular and, at the same time, to advise governments and international organisations on scientific issues. In doing so, the Academia Europaea is avowedly at the service of the general public. Through its work, scientific findings are to be disseminated, understood and made known to a wider public.

Prof. Stephan V. Sobolev, a new member of the Academia Europaea, is currently Principal Investigator of the ERC Synergy Grant for the MEET project (Monitoring Earth Evolution through Time, 2020-2026) in the Geodynamic Modelling Section at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. He headed this section from its foundation in 2007 to 2019. In addition, Stephan Sobolev is Professor of Geodynamics at the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Potsdam. His current research focuses on the effects of surface erosion on the evolution of plate tectonics on Earth and on the modeling of mantle convection and tectonic style in the early period of Earth's evolution. His recent research has also focused on modeling seismic cycles of giant subduction earthquakes and factors controlling their maximum magnitudes.
