07.09.2017: Starting on 1 September, Stefano Parolai, former Head of the GFZ Centre for Early Warning Systems, becomes Director of the Center for Seismological Research (CSR) at the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) in Trieste, Italy. Interims manager of the GFZ sections becomes Jörn Lauterjung, Director of the department Geoservices.

Both institutions, GFZ and OGS, plan to cooperate in the future. With the departure of Parolai, Massimiliano Pittore becomes scientific contact of the GFZ Centre for Early Warning Systems.

In addition to its position at the GFZ, Stefano Parolai is teaching engineering seismology, surface waves analysis, and inversion methods at the Technical University of Berlin and General Secretary of the European Seismological Commission, ESC. His research focus is on early warning systems, in Europe and the Mediterranean, and the development of new methods for the estimation of ground motion variability on short distances during earthquakes. Parolai also works with several aspects of seismic risk assessment and mitigation as well as the interaction of geo-hazards and cascading effects. (ak)
