23.01.2017: The „Splintered ice block“ is the public’s favorite picture of the new GFZ calendar. The photo was taken by Katharina Cygan, apprentice laboratory technician in the GFZ section Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry, and got 91 of 341 votes.

Every year the GFZ publishes a calendar presenting the most impressive pictures from the research of the centre. The scientists, technicians, and apprenticees take pictures during their research trips all across the world as well as in the laboratory, or create computer graphics. A jury chooses the fourteen best pictures: twelve pictures for the twelve months, one picture for the cover and one for the imprint.

This year, for the first time, the public’s favorite picture was selected, endowed with a prize money of 200 Euros. Via an online voting and an offline voting that was run during the GFZ New Year Reception of last week’s Wednesday, the public’s choice was selected. It is the photo “Splintered ice block” by the apprentee Katharina Cygan that was taken during her laboratory technician apprenticeship at the GFZ is a preparative laboratory. Part of the training is the synthesis of different inorganic and organic substances. Hereby, ice is required for the cooling of some compounds during or after production. The photo was taken during preparation of ice cooling for the synthesis of acetylsalicyclic acid.

On second place is a picture by Stefan Weisheit from the GFZ section Space Deodetic Techniques, taken close to the GFZ satellite receiver station on Spitzbergen. Third place goes to „Fleur de Sel – salt crystals floating in a water-filled sinkhole at the Dead Sea, Jordan“ by Eoghan Holohan, GFZ section Physics of Earthquakes and volcanoes. (ak)
