Personalia | Professorship for Jens Wickert

Starting on 1 March, Jens Wickert, GFZ section Space Geodetic Techniques and Spokesperson of the Helmholtz Topic GPS Atmosphere Sounding, is called to a joint professorship „GNSS Remote Sensing, Navigation, and Positioning“ between the TU Berlin and GFZ.

01.03.2016: Starting on 1 March, Jens Wickert, GFZ section Space Geodetic Techniques and Spokesperson of the Helmholtz Topic GPS Atmosphere Sounding, is called to a joint professorship „GNSS Remote Sensing, Navigation, and Positioning“ between the TU Berlin and GFZ.

The professorship is the center of a new subject area at the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation Science at TU Berlin. This subject area will, amongst other topics, deal with usage of navigation satellite signals for remote sensing of the Earth’s atmosphere and surface. Part of this work is the implementation of new satellite missions.

After finishing his studies in physics, Jens Wickert worked as a scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Meteorological Service (DWD). Since 1999 he is with GFZ. During this time he finished a PhD in geophysics/meteorology at Karl-Franzens-University, Graz. He spent several research stays abroad, e.g., an overwintering at the German Neumayer research station in Antarctica as staff of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).

Jens Wickert leads several national and international research projects. He is Principal Investigator of a new experiment of the European Space Agency (ESA) on board of the International Space Station ISS that for the determination of ocean surface heights using reflected GNSS signals (GNSS = Global Navigation Satellite System).
