01.03.2016: Prof. Shprits is joining GFZ on March 1 as a leader of a working group on magnetospheric physics in GFZ section Earth’s Magnetic Field. He was successfully recruited for GFZ by the Helmholtz Recruiting Initiative.

His research focuses on the understanding of the dynamics of the energetic particle populations in the near-Earth space environment that are hazardous for satellites and human space flight. At GFZ he will work on topics related to space weather, modelling space environment, space observations, and data assimilation.

Yuri Shprits has received his PhD from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2005. He worked at UCLA, Skoltech/Russia, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and served as Principal Investigator on over 20 funded research projects. Besides publications in high-ranking scientific journals e.g. of the Nature Publishing Group, Yuri Shprits’ research was also highlightedin popular scientific journals like National Geographic, New Scientist, Spiegel, and the Forbes Magazine. In 2012he has been awarded by the US President Barack Obama with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists in their early career.
