Personalia | Bagnold Medal for Prof. Niels Hovius

Today, Prof. Niels Hovius, Head of the GFZ section Geomorphology, receives the Ralph Alger Bagnold Medal, at the general assembly of the European Geoscience Union EGU. This honours his outstanding achievements in the field of Geomorphology.

20.04.2016: Today, Prof. Niels Hovius, Head of the GFZ section Geomorphology, receives the Ralph Alger Bagnold Medal, at the general assembly of the European Geoscience Union EGU. This honours his outstanding achievements in the field of Geomorphology.

Niels Hovius is regarded as one of the worldwide leading Earth Surface Scientists. Next to his geoscientific work this Medal highlights his achievements in the fields of science communication and interdisciplinary exchange. The EGU honours Hovius as a “key figure in European Geomorphology”.

After his studies in Physical Geography and Earth Sciences in Utrecht, Netherlands, he obtained a PhD in Oxford, UK. Before coming to GFZ in 2012, he taught at the University of Cambridge for 13 years. Hovius is a founding editor of the open access journal Earth Surface Dynamics and was Chair of the EGU Outreach Committee. (ak)
