04.09.2014|Johannesburg: As of July 2014 Michael Wiedenbeck (GFZ) holds the title of honorary professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Professor Wiedenbeck has led the GFZ’s Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) facility since 1998, and since 2010 he has worked closely with earth scientists based at universities from across the Republic of South Africa.

At the core of this project is the creation of a network based around Potsdam’s new SIMS instrument, which was installed in late 2013.  Scientists in South Africa will be able to conduct geochemical research using the Potsdam instrument accessed via internet technology.  The recognition of Dr. Wiedenbeck as Honorary Professor will further strengthen the cooperation between the two institutions and for the first time will provide young scientists from Africa with first-hand contact with GFZ microanalytical infrastructure.

Furthermore,  Prof. Wiedenbeck in August was named member of the "Committee on International Participation"  of the American Geophysical Union.
