Helmholtz International Fellow Falk Amelung visists GFZ

GFZ is hosting Helmholtz International Fellow Falk Amelung from Miami University, USA, for five weeks for his research visit in Germany. He was awarded Helmholtz International Fellow already in 2018. The geophysicist performs research on natural hazards and geologic processes, associated with tectonic, volcanic, cryospheric, and man-made activities using space-geodetic data from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and geophysical modelling.

During his research stay at GFZ, Falk Amelung cooperates with Mahdi Motagh, GFZ section Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics, and Thomas Walter, section Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes, e.g. on volcano-earthquake interaction or exploiting atmospheric information from InSAR data. In 2018, he was already awarded the Helmholtz International Fellow Award for collaboration and short-term research visit at GFZ for the period 2019-2021.

Falk Amelung is currently member of the Science Team of the U.S. Indian InSAR satellite mission NISAR, launched in 2021. As of 2016, Falk Amelung is member of the Board of Directors at UNAVCO, a non-profit university-governed consortium that facilitates geoscience research and education using Geodesy. He was the main initiator of the so called Supersites concept, aiming at bringing scientists of different fields together, stimulating data exchange and extending the limits of satellite observations of natural hazards. He was panel member for the National Science Foundation (NSF) EarthScope program in 2014 and a panel member at NASA between 2014 and 2016 for the satellite missions ICESat, GRACE and NISAR. Between 2009 and 2011 Falk Amelung acted as the Chair of Western U.S. InSAR consortium (WInSAR), a consortium established to facilitate collaboration in, and advancement of, Earth science research using radar remote sensing data.
