29.09.2015|Berlin: „Dynamic Earth – from Alfred Wegener to today and beyond“ is the topic of the GeoBerlin2015, the joint annual meeting of the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft - Geologische Vereinigung (DGGV), and the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft (DMG). The meeting will take place in Berlin from 4 to 7 October.

In the Henry Ford Building of the Free University of Berlin, more than 800 scientists will review how the findings of Alfred Wegener, a meteorologist, polar researcher, and geoscientist of the turn of the nineteenth century, evolved into modern Earth system science. The theory of continental drift, accepted only after his death, is considered as his most important contribution to the sciences. The meeting will explore how his findings evolved into a modern understanding of system Earth as a whole. A special emphasis will be on the interaction of System Earth with human society, focusing on: natural hazards, the impact of climate change, and the use of natural resources.

Internationally outstanding scientists will provide plenary lectures. In events open to the general public an account is given of Wegener’s final trip to Greenland with a fatal outcome. Furthermore, the history of science of his hypotheses will be elucidated. The conference is staged by the FU Berlin and GFZ Potsdam, and is supported by the Potsdam-Berlin Geosciences coordination platform Geo.X.
