From science to school – 15th training for teachers "Meere und Ozeane"

The way of new scientific knowledge into schools can be a long one. The training for teachers “System Erde” (English: “System Earth”) directly addresses teachers to present to them new scientific results. In cooperation with the Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft (DMG) the GFZ organizes the 15th “System Erde” training for teachers on 14 and 15 November, on the topic: "Meere und Ozeane: Entdecken, nutzen, schützen " (Engl.: Seas and Oceans: discover, use, protect).

14.11.2016: The way of new scientific knowledge into schools can be a long one.

More than ninety teachers and interested students attend the training to inform themselves of new developments in Earth sciences. The event is under the title “Meere und Ozeane” (Engl.: “Seas and Oceans”), the current topic of the Science Year of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF.

In specialist lectures, geoscientists from the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Oceanic Research, the Baltic Earth Network, the DMG, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency Hamburg, and the GFZ present news and interesting subjects from the geoscientific field of research on seas and oceans. Like this, the training supports the immediate transfer of knowledge from research to schools. Within the presentations, geoscientific topics are communicated that can complement education at schools thematically as well as practically. Another aim is to make the geography lessons at school more applied and to strengthen the currently small amount of natural science. (ak)
