ETN System-Risk Kick-Off Meeting

[Translate to Englisch:] System-Risk, “A Large-Scale Systems Approach to Flood Risk Assessment and Management”,ist ein Marie-Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network ETN.

10.10.2016: System-Risk, “A Large-Scale Systems Approach to Flood Risk Assessment and Management”,is a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network ETN. On October 10 and 11, the participants of the network get together for a Kick-Off Meeting in Potsdam. Scientists, and specialist representatives from the industry and authorities will meet to shape a common view on contemporary challenges in flood risk science, engineering, insurance, and policy making.

The majority of flood research has centered on small- to meso-scale catchments. Today, increased data availability, new numerical algorithms, and dramatically higher computer performance enable large-scale analyses and modelling which were not feasible a few years ago. System-Risk will make use of this.

The ETN trains 15 early stage researchers and aims at opening several career opportunities within our outside of scientific research. The scientists work on a system approach to flood risk with particular research spotlights on: Risk chain, interactions, and temporal dynamics within flood risk research. They do not only focus on research but also complete trainings on knowledge transfer and management. Professor Bruno Merz, Head of the GFZ section Hydrology, is coordinator of the ETN, Dr. Kai Schröter is the project manager. Overall there are ten leading centres of flood research in Europe participating in the network, as well as eight partners from the industry and administration. (ak)
