Since its foundation in 1992 the German Research Centre for Geosciences participated with more than 210 projects in the EU's Research Framework Programmes in European consortia. Some of these projects have been or are coordinated at the GFZ.

In Horizon 2020 (Förderperiode 2014-2020) war das GFZ an 62 Projekten beteiligt und hat über 41 Mio. Euro an Fördermitteln von der EU eingeworben. Dazu kommen weitere 21 Projekte in anderen Förderprogrammen der EU, wie z.B. RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel), ERA-NETs, EIT Raw Materials oder Interreg.
