PhD (f/m/x) for Geomagnetism-Project "CORRBAS II"
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. With approximately 1,300 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth.
As a partner in Geo.X, the GFZ has access to an excellent network of other geoscience institutions in Potsdam and Berlin. This largest regional concentration of geoscientific competence in Europe offers first-class cooperation and development opportunities.
For section 2.3 Geomagnetism (department “Geophysics”), we are looking for a:

PhD (f/m/x) for Geomagnetism-Project "CORRBAS II"

Reference Number 5352

This position is part of a joint project with the Mathematics Institute of the University of Potsdam. Data-based models (reconstructions) of the past geomagnetic field are powerful tools to study the geodynamo process generating the Earth’s magnetic field or to estimate the past shielding against solar wind and galactic cosmic rays. Recently, data assimilation techniques have been employed in a novel mathematical framework to construct such models. The aim of the project is to extend this framework to incorporate temporally correlated paleomagnetic sediment core records. A particular focus lies on the quantification of uncertainties resulting from the dating process.

The project, led by Prof. Matthias Holschneider (University of Potsdam) and Dr. Monika Korte (GFZ), will also include a post-doctoral researcher, and the two project scientists are expected to collaborate closely at both institutes.

Your responsibilities:

  • Familiarize yourself with the existing mathematical method and apply it to calibrate sediment data
  • Extend the method to reflect the sedimentation process
  • Write, implement and test the method in form of computer programs
  • Present results at international conferences and in scientific publications

Your qualifications:

  • Masters degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, physics or mathematics
  • Experience or strong interest in statistical methods
  • Strong interest in understanding geological dating and magnetic sediment properties
  • Good command of spoken and written English language
  • Experience with Python or a similar programming language
  • Experience with Linux
