The HuT (The Human-Tech Nexus - Building a Safe Haven to cope with Climate Extremes) project, supported by the European Commission Horizon Europe programme, will set out to develop and employ innovative disaster risk reduction solutions to account for the environmental changes expected to result from climate change. The project, which will start 1st October 2022 with a duration of 48 months, has as its main aim the extension of the state-of-the-art to promote a “best set” of trans-disciplinary risk management tools and practices that could be adopted and employed extensively across Europe for as many environments as possible. The project’s activities will be centred around a number of critical dimensions, with a transdisciplinary approach being followed, while considering systemic risk, co-production, cross-fertilization, and transferability, all with the intention of the project’s outcomes contributing to the long-term sustainable social and economic development of European society.
Within The HuT project, the Dynamic Exposure Modelling (DEM) group of Section 2.6 will be heavily involved in Work Package 4 Science and Technology, specifically Task 4.3 Innovative Nexus Modelling. The activities of this task are concerned with improving and adapting modelling approaches for risk characterisation (hazard and exposure) while exploiting open data sources, a primary aspect of the DEM group’s efforts. In particular, two demonstrators exploiting the DEM approaches will be developed as part of this task within a hazard agnostic framework for exposure mapping.
Therefore, it will be necessary to establish/expand upon existing infrastructure for the required databases prior to the project’s start and for its early stages, and which will need to be presented at the project’s kick off meeting (12-14 October 2022). For this reason, a position is open for a systems administration and informatics specialist. This specialist will be responsible for a number of servers that are employed in the development of the dynamic exposure models exploited by the HuT project. A special attention will be made to ensure the sustainability of this infrastructure and the recruited person will be responsible of the documentation, transfer of knowledge and integration of these new servers in the IT infrastructure of the section section and more generally GFZ.
- Support the development of the full computational chain for building-by-building exposure.
- Support the development of the rapid dissemination mechanism for exposure data.
- Support the development of the rule-based engine for the assessment of exposure indicators.
- Maintain large databases and complex software systems.
- Maintain the Linux servers and development computers.
- Manage the open-source community around the exposure model software system and the respective repositories.
- Maintain the websites disseminating the exposure model and providing documentation.
- Bachelor degree in informatics or equivalent and at least three years of practise
- Advanced experience with large-scale computing and data handling, virtualization and containerization.
- Advanced experience with OpenStreetMap data, in particular building data, and the OpenStreetMap software stack.
- Experience with the community aspects of OpenStreetMap and other open data or software products, i.e. governance in open-source projects, crowd-sourcing, data protection.
- Experience in participatory technologies and community involvement.
- Willingness to work in an international, interdisciplinary team.
- Willingness to travel with focus on Europe and East Asia.

Fixed-term: 18 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 12 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Part-time 40% (currently 15.60 h/week)
