GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences Abstract (EDOC: 2186)The electrical resistivity of rocks is a physical property, which depends on the content and distribution of fluids rockmelts, temperature and graphite. All these constituents influence the rheological properties of the lithosphere. The electromagnetic sounding method therefore provides a means to map these properties throughout the lithosphere. A quantitative knowledge of time-space relations of the inducing magnetic field in the ionosphere and magnetosphere are necessary. The Andean orogeny the Kenya rift and orogenic control1ed fossile fractures in the Variscan basement are first targets of the electromagnetic sounding experiments which are started at the GeoForschungsZentrum.
