Centre for Early Warning EWS
Head of Centre: Dr. Stefano Parolai
In the focus of the Center for Tsunami Early Warning is the GITEWS project, the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System. This project is part of the reconstruction aid donated by the German government to the affected regions bordering the Indian Ocean after the destructive tsunami which occurred on Boxing Day, 2004. Its goal is to develop an effective early warning system for the Indian Ocean, with special emphasis on Indonesia. Under the leadership of the GFZ, more than 120 scientists and engineers from nine German research institutions are working with Indonesian experts on this project. An important milestone was reached in November 2008, when the system was transferred to Indonesia. The optimization of the complete system is expected to be completed in 2010. During this time, the Indonesian partners will receive training and experience, while jointly operating the system.
