Topics

Utilisation of the geosphere and environmental protection are in the focus of the Centre for CO2 Storage. This interdisciplinary group studies geotechnical applications with a holistic approach.

CO2 Storage
The CO2MAN (CO2 Reservoir Management) integrated project aims to advance the understanding of the science and practical processes involved in underground storage of CO2 to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The consortium running this BMBF/GEOTECHNOLOGIEN project consists of 6 partners.

Geophysical Monitoring

The centre for CO2 storage applies and develops seismic and geoelectrical techniques to monitor the CO2 storage formation. We combine borehole and surface based methods in order to achieve high resolution close to the injection as well as a high degree of spatial coverage for monitoring the reservoir as a whole. The methods applied comprise 2D and 3D seismics, (offset) VSP, seismic crosshole tomography, geoelectrical crosshole tomography and surface-downhole geoelectrics. Within collaborations with internal and external partners further seismological and electromagnetic monitoring methods are being investigated.

Process Modelling

The Process Modelling Group of the Centre for CO2 Storage investigatescoupled processes occurring in CO2 storage formations usingnumerical modelling. Our goals are the support of storage operations and theprediction of long-term behavior of the injected CO2. The Ketzin pilot site plays an important role within the scope of our main activities.
