South Atlantic Margin
Scope
South Atlantic margins have accumulated large post-rift sediment volumes and they store important accumulations of hydrocarbon resources. The Congo deep-sea fan, located off-shore the Congo-Angola margin, is one of the main depocenters in the southeastern Atlantic and it represents an ideal setting to study the effects of large sediment volumes on the generation, migration, sequestration, and leakage of hydrocarbons in a mature passive margin.
Methods
We develop an integrated approach which combines seismic interpretation, in order to determine the basin architecture and the fan seismostratigraphy, with quantitative hydrocarbon system modelling.
Results
Results from this research will provide an enhanced basin-wide view of the history of hydrocarbon generation and fluid movements in the basin, and will improve our knowledge of the continental margin evolution in terms of driving factors for sediment supply and deposition. This project complements ongoing studies of section 4.3. in the frame of INKABA YE AFRICA and EUROMARGINS.
